“We need to educate ourselves more about broadband and brainstorm possible experiments. The next step in the process is that Google will pick several communities to do follow-up work with. If we are selected for follow-up we need to be evolving our knowledge. If we are not selected for follow-up, we still want improved broadband and can organize to help make that happen.” David Fisher
On Feb. 10, Google announced that it would select at least one community of 50,000 to 500,000 in the United States for its experimental 1 Gb/second high-speed fiber network.
The one-page nomination asks for ideas for “Why should Google build a fiber to the home network where you live?”, and asks questions about the nominator’s current bandwidth. There are links to free bandwidth tests at http://broadband.gov.
Supporters for a high-speed Internet connection on Maui can share their comments on the Google Fiber for Maui Facebook page to help others with their nomination. Ideas and comments can also be shared at http://www.hifimaui.com and choice video content can be uploaded to YouTube at the URL address listed above.
Deadline for submitting nominations on the Google site is March 26.
Google is asking local governments and residents to express their interest in the fiber optic trial, and to provide information about their community by completing our request for information.
